Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father

God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.” When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!”
“Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.” As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.
Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing— all this because you obeyed my command.”
-First Reading for the Second Sunday of Lent
Are you up for a challenge? Recently I was thinking about this passage of the scriptures. I thought about how Abraham was faithful, and how deep his trust was in the Lord. Initially I planned on reflecting over that theme. However, a thought came to my mind just as I was going to start typing. My thought was this. Abraham was willing to do what the Lord commanded him to do, even if it was further than what most of us would be willing to do. This brought me to the fact that God responds to Abraham's faithfulness. In his response, he shows that he will never be outdone in goodness.
Abraham was saved from having to lose the one that he loves the most. His son Issac was saved at the last minute by God's intervention. A sacrifice was still made, but not what Abraham had expected. God responds in kind. He sends Jesus, his only son. The person he loves the most left the comfort of his heavenly home to be offered as a sacrifice. He, like Issac, carries the wood of his sacrifice up the mountain. However, God goes beyond the sacrifice of Abraham in that he does not withhold his beloved son. Jesus died for us and for our sins. In the same way that the ram was sacrificed in the story of Abraham and Issac. So today I want to offer you a challenge. Offer what you can to God, try to outdo him in generosity, love, and mercy. Then sit back and see how he responds. I guarantee you his response will not disappoint.
Reflection Questions
What are the big sacrifices you have made for the Lord?
Has the Lord responded to those sacrifices you have made to follow him?
What are you going to try to "outdo" the Lord in this week?
